I had come on the trip with the expectation that I would really follow the geology of what was passing by. I had brought along a book to read to help make sense of it all. And the guides were very good about telling us what we were seeing and helping us distinguish the various rock layers and the geology that underlay the canyon.
But it all passed over me as I became enchanted by the canyon. Enchanted is the best word I can think of to describe it. And in the end I just wanted to absorb the canyon as it passed before us. Using the techniques of mindfulness turned out to be the best way for me to do this. To just concentrate intensely on what I was seeing, to shut out as much of the extraneous as possible, to just drink it in, and to try to never let it go.
