above: The canyon is divided into sections, which are based primarily on the rock formations along that part of the river. Most of the sections are named after the specific geological formation, or in this case the geological age in which the rocks were deposited (Permian: 286-245 MYA). The photo was taken from above on the Navajo bridge, just downstream from Lee's Ferry.
right: One of the many small riffles we were to encounter. Most rapids and riffles are found where a side canyon has washed rock debris out into the main channel.
