After renting another car in Puerto Montt we drove east toward the Andes. Parque Nacional Alerce Andino is typical of the vegetation that used to cover the foothills of the Andes. It is one of the few places the Alerce (Fitzroya cupressoides) trees still exist.
The foothills lack the grandeur of the Andean peaks but are impressive nonetheless.
One evening the hillsides turned red as the sunset bounced in under the cloud cover. The photograph is not an exaggeration.
