On Volcan Osorno, Parque Nacional Vincente Perez Rosales

mountain woods   pumice on volcanic cone

As you climb up Volcan Osorno you pass from lowland forest into a temperate cloud forest (right). The vegetation in this forest thrives on the moisture brought in by the frequent rains and from the mist in the clouds that hangs around the cinder cone.

The cone (above) is composed of ejected volcanic materials and the upper portion is permanently covered by snow. It is that snow covered cone that you see standing out so distinctively.
