Traditional Church, Chiloe

traditional church, chiloe

This church is typical of small churches in rural Chile. Most have tin roofs and the walls are sheathed with wooden shingles. Originally the wood for the shingles came from alerce trees but this species of tree has been logged out and is now a threatened species.

Each local community developed their own patterns in the cuts on the ends of the shingles and tended to use this pattern on the local churches and houses.
