The Turneffe Islands are formed from the highlands of an ancient range of hills paralleling the eastern coast of present day Belize. After the rise in sea levels at the end of the last ice age only a few outcrops remain exposed and these form the Turneffe Islands.
We stayed for a week at Blackbird Caye Resort on the eastern edge of the islands. It is a wonderful place to snorkel and dive but it is also a very nice place to escape the northern winter for a while and there are certainly other things to see. (right: Little Blue Heron)
