You can think of Australia as a flat pancake of rock. Around the edges the old pancake crumbles away and forms a coastal zone, but the bulk of the continent is the flat tableland on top of the pancake. This tableland, in its various guises, is the "bush". Although it seems to vary little as you move along, once your eye learns to read the signs it is actually quite different from place to place.
