When the annual rainfall falls below a certain level the woody trees and shrubs begin to be replaced by grasses. Intermediate landscapes, like the one above, have just enough rainfall to maintain a few trees and shrubs but not enough so that the trees can form a complete canopy.

The ground is mostly covered by rock fragments left from the weathering of the tropical lateritic soils.
