This fella (a Perentie, Varanus gigantea) just ambled across the road as we were driving along. He stopped and we stopped. He's about 2 meters long (6 feet) including the tail. Knowing they are not venemous I got as close as I could (without disturbing it) to photograph it. Later I learned that while not venemous they are aggressive and that bites cause wicked infections. Fools rush in where more knowledgable biologists fear to tread.
For anyone who might be interested, the word "goanna" is an Aussie corruption of "iguana", a completely different family of lizards. Perentie are a kind of monitor lizard, family Varanidae.
