Australia has an astounding variety of orchids - as we mentioned earlier, perhaps 2600 or so species. Many of these orchids have a very limited range and are in danger of extinction. Australia is being developed, for better or worse, and the habitats containing many of these orchids are disappearing. Many seem to have already disappeared. David Jones, in his monumental work Native Orchids of Australia estimates that "several thousand" species have already become extinct. As Ned Kelly said,"Such is life"
