Cycads, Cycas calcicola

cycad leaf

Cycads are fairly primitive plants, more closely related to pine trees than anything else most of us are familiar with. This species, Cycas calcicola, was not discovered until a few years ago and exists only in a few places in the Northern Territory. The leaves are covered with loose hairs and scales which gives them their whitish silvery color. The covering probably serves to reduce water loss from the leaves.
