Grey Currawong, Strepera versicolor

Alert, curious, and intelligent, the grey currawong act almost as if they were jays or small crows, but they are in fact completely unrelated.

Laughing Kookaburra, Dacelo novaeguineae

This is another bird we associate with Stirling Range National Park. A group of these oversized kingfishers, which prey on lizards and other small animals, roosted every night in the tall trees around our campsite. We never got a very good look at them because they always arrived late in the evening just as it was getting too dark to see or left early in the morning before there was very much light. However, we did enjoy being lulled to sleep and awakened in the morning by the calls of the kookaburra.
