Boab Trees

boab tree

Strange. Unworldly. Weird. All of these words seem to apply to the boab or baobab tree, Adansonia gregorii. The pithy trunk serves the plant as a water reservoir during the dry season. The Australian species probably came from Africa or Madagascar, perhaps by natural dispersal of the fruits but more likely deliberately or accidently introduced to the northwest coastal area by Arabian seafarers.
